Everything Tend Photos does for your iCloud Photos library
Tend Photos is a Mac app for cleaning up iCloud Photos — a duplicate photo finder for Mac that also scores quality, recommends the best shot, enhances photos without touching the originals, and helps you organize what's left. It runs entirely on your Mac, and nothing in your library changes until you approve it.
Most photo cleaners stop at "find and delete." Tend Photos covers the whole job: clear out the clutter, keep the best version of every moment, and make the library easier to live with afterward. Below is what each part of the app actually does. Every feature shares the same rule — you make the decisions, and you see exactly what will happen before it happens.
Duplicate and similar photo detection for Mac
Tend Photos scans your entire iCloud Photos library for exact duplicates and near-duplicates — burst shots from the same second, re-saved edits, screenshots you saved twice, accidental imports from old backups. It groups them side by side so you can see what you actually have before deciding anything.
The scan runs natively on Apple's PhotoKit framework, so it understands the iCloud Photos stack instead of only seeing whatever happens to be downloaded locally — a common blind spot in other duplicate finders. A library of 20,000–50,000 photos typically scans in 2–5 minutes on a recent Mac, with results appearing as the scan runs so you can start reviewing right away.
Tend PRO adds video duplicate detection for clips and Live Photo pairs, plus similarity sensitivity controls so you can tune how strictly near-duplicates are matched — tighter for exact bursts, looser for a broader sweep.
Photo quality scoring and best-shot keeper recommendation
In every duplicate group, Tend Photos scores each photo on sharpness, exposure, and resolution to identify the strongest shot — and marks it with a clear "Best Shot" badge so you understand why it was chosen. No more squinting at twelve near-identical portraits to find the one where the focus actually landed.
The keeper recommendation is a starting point, not an order. If Tend Photos suggests a technically sharper photo but you prefer a different one, tap the one you want and the selection updates. It's especially useful for burst series and back-to-back captures, where the differences are real but easy to miss at a glance.
Want help cleaning up the blurry ones first? Tend Photos surfaces low-quality shots so you can clear the easy losses before reviewing the close calls.

Non-destructive photo enhancement (only here)
This is the feature no other photo cleaner offers. When you find a photo worth keeping but wish it looked a little better, you don't have to open a separate editor. Tend Photos lets you adjust brightness, contrast, and sharpness, or apply filter presets, right inside the cleanup session.
Every enhancement is non-destructive. Tend Photos saves an enhanced copy alongside your original, which is never modified. There's a before/after preview so you can see the change before you commit, and because the original stays untouched, every edit is reversible.
Competing tools — Gemini 2, PhotoSweeper, Duplicate Photos Fixer Pro — are pure detect-and-delete utilities with no editing at all. Tend Photos is built to improve your library, not just shrink it. Enhancement workflows in Tend PRO let you batch-apply adjustments across multiple photos at once.
Smart Insights: auto-categorization and natural-language photo search
Smart Insights automatically sorts your library into categories — screenshots, documents, landscapes, people, pets, food, favorites, videos, and more — so you can finally see the shape of your collection. Thousands of forgotten screenshots and receipts become a single reviewable group instead of an endless scroll.
You can also search your library in plain language. Type "receipts from last year" or "beach photos from 2023" and Tend Photos finds them — all processed on-device, no cloud, no account. It's the kind of search no other cleaner in this category offers.
For deeper organization, Tend PRO adds smart suggestions based on trips, family, recurring themes, and bills, turning a finished cleanup into a genuinely organized library.
Albums and organization, with your approval
A cleanup shouldn't end with empty space and nothing else. Tend Photos helps you organize what's left: create albums, manage folders, and curate favorites directly from your review results and Smart Insights categories.
As with everything else in the app, organization is consent-first. Tend Photos suggests; you approve. No album is created, no photo is moved, until you say so. Tend PRO surfaces smart album suggestions — "Looks like 230 photos from your trip to Italy — create an album?" — and adds favorites management and multiple saved library profiles for people who manage more than one Photos library.
Almost ready. Tend Photos is a free Mac app with an optional one-time Tend PRO upgrade ($19.99, no subscription, ever). Join the waitlist to be first in line at launch.
Safety and consent: nothing changes until you say so
Tend Photos is built on a consent-first model, and that's the point of the whole app. Nothing is deleted, edited, or reorganized on its own. There's no auto-delete, no one-click bulk cleanup, no background processing. To remove photos, you select them, review the full selection, and type "DELETE" to confirm. Close the app before confirming and nothing happens.
Several extra safeguards back that up. You can export photos to a folder before deleting them, as a safety net. After your first batch delete, Tend Photos explains the Recently Deleted album — photos go there and stay recoverable for 30 days in the Photos app. And a complete, local action history records every scan, every deletion, and every enhancement, so you always know exactly what changed and when. The history can be exported, giving you an audit trail no competitor offers.
This directly answers the category's most common complaint — "it deleted the wrong one." Tend Photos shows you what will be deleted, why a keeper was chosen, and how to recover anything, before you ever commit.
Privacy: 100% local, Data Not Collected
Every scan, every quality score, every duplicate comparison, and every Smart Insights category is computed on your Mac using Apple's PhotoKit framework. No photos, thumbnails, metadata, or filenames are ever uploaded to any server. There's no account to create and no third party involved in any part of the analysis.
Tend Photos collects no data about you or your library — its App Store privacy label reads Data Not Collected. The only thing stored on disk is your local action history file, which lives on your Mac, under your control, and is never sent anywhere. You grant Photos access once, and it's used only on your Mac, only while you're using the app.
For people who are nervous about handing an app access to their entire photo library, that's the whole reassurance: your photos never leave your Mac.
